I need an oil change. I will not do it myself tonight. Why? Because it will be dark and it is supposed to be - 28 C or -19F out.

Gonna quick lube it. Yeah, it's a rip off, but at this point I just want to be warm.

In my case w/ my new car I get them free for two years...

Sounds more like a reason to buy a kerosene "torpedo heater" and aim it under the car. Thus to burn off your eyebrows, but in toasty comfort.

yup, the first OC on my Fiesta ST was due during the last cold snap (only -17*F then) so I gladly paid the dealer $38 for 4.5 quarts of semi-synthetic, a filter, and 15 minutes of thier time. Actually, the local Ford dealer is one of the cheapest oil changes in town...

I pay my mechanic to do it because his price competitive with the quick lubes, I trust him to do a good job, I can see his shop from my office and I don't have to try to dispose of waste oil.

Here's another reason: you have no garage, no access to a garage, and your condo association by-laws explicitly forbid doing vehicle maintenance such as oil changes in the parking lot (we live next to a city-owned park and pond, and they are concerned about spills and drainage issues).

My buddy did the same thing with his GTI. But I kept telling him..."But..but...someone else will be touching your car!"

Same here. Used to go to a quick lube that I knew the owner, but when I got my F150 started going to the Ford garage. They are $10/change higher, but every 4th change is free. But so far I've only paid full price once out of three oil changes.

With my experience messing crap up in my VW bus, and the fact it is just a new Dart, nothing that special, it is worth the risk I feel

I did mine a couple weeks back before the first cold stretch. A Fumoto valve will make a world of difference. Get outside, throw drain pan underneath the car, turn the valve, scamper back inside for 10 minutes while you gather the new oil, filter, and a couple of rags from your stash. Go back outside, fill oil, realize you forgot to close the valve, close valve before more drains out, clean up mess, curse yourself for not bringing it to the dealer, finish job, spread kitty litter on spilled oil, clean, live, learn.

Most of the time, I can get mine done for a reasonable price at a place I trust, for the same price as what oil would cost, and I don't have to dispose of the oil myself.

With my car hitting high-mileage, though, I'll be starting the process myself soon.

I've been there.

Hell, just recently a local dealer sent us a $9.95 oil change coupon and I was like...... "Fuck, I can't buy a filter and 6 quarts of oil that cheap, let 'em do it!" for the wife's car.

Then they noted it needs rear brakes.

Oh well, at least now I know.

With my recent new car purchase, I am about to experience a program like that for the first time. Do you know, can you be picky about what they use? If I pay the difference, can I be sure they don't go cheap?

Here's a reason not to go to the quick lube place, but your regular mechanic instead: crap oil filters and crap oil. Green mechanics who sometimes forget drain plugs or cross thread and overtighten them. I understand not wanting to pull off an oil change in extreme temps. But boy do I hate going to the quick lube chains.

To me, the most compelling reason to do your own oil changes is that it's the only way to ensure that nobody over-torques and strips your drain plug!

That said, trying to do them in the winter (without the benefit of a garage) sure is a drag. I'm facing an oil and trans fluid change this weekend, and although I already have all the supplies, I'm sore tempted to just cart it all over to the shop and have them do the dirty work. However, I'd sooner leave my car with the methheads at the end of my block than let any Jiffy Lube clowns touch it.

I would never take my car to a quick lube chain. They hire minimally experienced kids at rock-bottom wages, and are notorious for scamming customers . You're also assured of getting the cheapest, lowest-quality filter and oil they can get away with.

My co-worker, who's kind of naive about this stuff, took her car to Jiffy Lube recently, and not only did they add on $100 of un-asked-for services without her permission (they basically just browbeat her into accepting them over the phone after she'd dropped off the car), but they somehow broke her glovebox, didn't say anything about it when she picked up the car, then denied responsibility once she discovered it and took the car back. It took 3 days of hassle before they grudgingly agreed to fix it, and then they took two days to do the repair.

The crazy thing is, if you Google "quick lube scam," or peruse online forums , you find that this kind of thing is practically routine with these assclowns. Jiffy Lube is the most notorious offender, but any chain that operates on the same low-price model is prone to the same perils. Even if they're not actively trying to scam you, they're likely to screw up your car through mere incompetence.

I just called my regular. I have never used him for oil before. I didnt ask how much, so I guess we will find out. I am not worried though. Can't possibly be more money than the rip off quick lubes.

I used to work at a quick lube. (Yes, I was super-careful, and no, I didn't over-torque any drain plugs or kill any engines.)

In the winter, it was so cold that I'd take a shop wrag, wrap it around my hands, and hold the exhaust pipe to stay warm.

Summer was worse.

It was 55 bucks. Which is competitive with quick lube. Maybe a lil cheaper. It was a win, except walking the 3kms in -29 to go to work after. Shit was cold son,?
